Larry Lehman Memorial Long Distance Race

This is the annual race held during June.  All sailors and sailing clubs are invited to participate.  Trophies are awarded to the first three finishers.  A recruiting luau is held the evening of the race.

This race was first held April 28, 2001, with 12 boats participating, to honor a past Editor and Commodore, Larry Lehman.  He was a wildlife biologist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.  Larry and Cathy Lehman joined Patoka Lake Sailing Club in 1990.  In 1991 he began issuing our newsletter and continued until he was elected Commodore in mid-1196 when our Commodore and Vice-Commodore moved out of the area.  He and Cathy spent as much time as possible at Patoka Lake on “Wind Song” a Columbia 22, and then in 1995 on “Duchess” a Catalina 27.  Larry had a very outgoing personality, was always ready to lend a hand, really enjoyed sailing and racing, and wanted everyone else to know how much fun it was.  Membership and participation in the races and social events increased during his four years as Commodore, due mostly to his efforts.

Lung Cancer took Larry January 15, 2001.  As he always finished his notes, “Smooth Sailing” Commodore.
